Working Visit by the Minister of Justice and Security to Heerlen

Minister David van Weel paid a working visit to Heerlen today. He wants to gain an understanding of the issues surrounding subversive crime, street safety, quality of life, and public nuisances.

In Vrieheide, the minister observed how various organizations in the neighborhood work together. He gained an understanding of how this collaboration helps create a safe and pleasant neighborhood. He also saw what this means for the residents. Afterward, the minister spoke with members of the intervention team, the police, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office. They shared their experiences and explained how they work together to combat subversive crime.

The working visit demonstrates how important cooperation is between Heerlen and the ministry. This cooperation is necessary to secure additional funding and personnel to ensure a safe and livable environment in Heerlen and Parkstad. Effective cooperation with the police across the border is also important. This will enable us to better tackle cross-border criminal activities that undermine public safety. The Limburg border is a challenge not only for this region, but for the entire Netherlands.

Mayor Roel Wever :

“Of course, it would have been nice if the minister had brought a contingent of police officers with him, but I understand that’s not possible. In any case, the minister is willing to contribute ideas on how to approach the Parkstad Plan. And that’s a very good thing.”
