Apply for energy allowance
Low-income people could get extra money to pay energy bills in 2023. In 2024, this allowance will no longer be there. But you may still get money for 2023.

Did you not apply for the 2023 energy surcharge and think you are entitled to it? Then you can often still apply for the allowance retroactively.
Description
In 2023, low-income residents received an energy supplement of 1,300 euros. In 2024, this supplement will no longer be there.
Has the municipality already given you €500 energy allowance for 2023? And are you still living in the municipality? Then you will get the remaining €800 automatically.
Have you not applied for the 2023 energy allowance and are entitled to it? Then you can often still apply for the surcharge retroactively.
Were you receiving student finance with a supplementary grant in October 2023? If so, DUO will automatically give you a one-time energy allowance of 400 euros from January 2024. Students who were in the loan phase in October 2023 and had a supplementary grant in the last month before the start of the loan phase are also entitled to an energy surcharge from DUO.
Are you not entitled to energy allowance? Sometimes you can apply for individual special assistance. Please contact municipality for this.
Terms
The terms of the energy surcharge from municipality are:
- You are 21 years of age or older.
- You do not receive student loans.
- You live in this municipality.
- You are registered in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP) with a residential address.
- You have a valid Dutch identity document or a valid residence permit.
- You are not staying in a nursing or care home.
- You do not reside in a sheltered or assisted living facility.
- You are not a room resident.
- You have your own energy contract
- Your income does not exceed 130% of the social assistance standard. That norm can vary and depends on age and family situation.
