In the Netherlands, geocaching, the search for treasure with a GPS using geographical coordinates, is a rapidly growing recreational activity. An increasing number of caches (treasures) have also been placed, searched for and found in the municipality of Heerlen.

Description

The Municipality of Heerlen is open to this fun and sporting activity. We do want to prevent nuisance and unsafe situations in the public area, neighborhoods or nature. You may place a cache without a permit/exemption. The municipality never gives permission for sticking or paneling trees. You must comply with a number of general rules. These rules can be found under the heading "conditions".

Terms

You may place a cache if you follow the ground rules in the manual with the following additional conditions:

  • You may not place caches on or on municipal trees without a permit (more information see tree ordinance).
  • The municipality does not take the presence of the cache into account when performing its duties. The municipality can and may (have) a cache removed if it is found to be causing damage or nuisance. The owner of the cache cannot hold the municipality liable for this.
  • You may not cause damage or nuisance to nature or municipal property.
  • The location of the cache is accessible by public roads or public paths.
  • A cache must not have a detrimental effect on traffic safety, the usability of public roads or be a disturbing effect to the cityscape of the municipality of Heerlen.
  • You may not dig deep into municipal land with tools.
  • A private property on which there are buildings and in which people reside (such as a home, school or business) should not be inconvenienced by geocaching.
  • The person placing the cache is solely responsible for his cache. By placing a cache, the owner releases the Municipality of Heerlen from any liability that may arise as a result of placing, searching or finding the cache.
