Changing gender on birth certificate

You can change the gender on your birth certificate. You can do this at municipality where you were born.

Approach

This is how you change the gender on your birth certificate:

  • Contact the municipality where you were born.
  • You bring:
    • your valid ID
    • an expert statement (not older than 6 months), or
    • A court ruling if you want an X

Description

Your birth certificate shows your gender. You can have this changed: from male to female, or from female to male. You need an expert statement to do this. Read more about the expert statement at transgenderinfo.nl.

Do you not feel like a man or a woman? And do not want M or V but an X on your birth certificate? This is not yet regulated by law. You must go to court to do this. On the site of transgenderinfo.nl you can find more information about the procedure.

When communicating the gender change, you immediately specify which first name you want to use from now on.

After changing your birth certificate:

  • you can apply for new travel documents and a new driver's license
  • stands the adjustment in various administrations of the government
  • everyone on your personal list will be notified of the adjustment. These are your parents, any (former) partner and children. You can agree with municipality on a deadline for sending this notice.

Are you still listed on your child's birth certificate as the "mother from whom the child was born"? And have you had your gender changed in your own birth certificate? If so, you can have your entry on your child's birth certificate changed to "parent from whom the child was born.

You can also have your changed gender statement updated in the deed of recognition of the child, deed of recognition of the unborn foetus and deed of denial of paternity or maternity.

Terms

The requirements to change your gender on the birth certificate are:

  • You are 16 years of age or older.
  • You have Dutch nationality or you have lived in the Netherlands for at least 1 year with a valid residence permit.
  • You have an expert statement (not older than 6 months). Or a court ruling if you want an X.
