Update data in basic registration of personsBRP)

Everyone living in the Netherlands must be registered in the Basisregistratie PersonenBRP). Are your details in the BRP incorrect? Or do you want to change your details after a sex change or adoption? Please notify the municipality in which you live.

Approach

This is how you communicate a change of incorrect or outdated data in the Basic Registration of PersonsBRP):

  • Contact the municipality. The municipality will tell you if you can make the change online, or if you need to make an appointment. And what proof you will need.

Adjustment of data BRP with document from abroad

Does the official document needed come from abroad? For example, because you got married abroad? Then you may need to have the document translated. There are 3 possibilities:

  1. The document is in Dutch, French, German or English.
Then take this document with you. You do not need to have anything translated.
  2. The document is not in Dutch, German, French, or English. And the document is from an EU country.
Then bring this document with you, and a multilingual model form of the document. A multilingual model form is a translation of the document. You apply for it in that other EU country.
Don't have a multilingual model form of the document? Then you must have the document translated, and bring it with you to the appointment.
  3. The document is not in Dutch, German, French or English. And the document is not from an EU country.
Then have the document translated by an official translator and bring it with you to the appointment.

You can read more about using documents from abroad at Nederlandwereldwijd.nl.

Apply for new passport, identity card or driver's license

Do you change your first name, last name, gender, or date of birth? Then your passport, identity card, or driver's license is no longer valid. Therefore, apply for a new passport, new identity card, or new driver's license.

Cost

Updating BRP data is free of charge.

Description

The Basic Registration of PersonsBRP) contains your personal data. Such as your address, gender, nationality, and marital status. Some data are updated automatically. For example, if you get married in the Netherlands. Other data you provide yourself, such as a change of address.

You can view your data on MijnOverheid.nl. Are your details in the BRP incorrect? Report the change to the municipality immediately. The municipality will then adjust your data.

Gender change

After your gender change, you can have the data from before the gender change removed from the BRP . So that, for example, your old name, and your previous gender, can no longer be seen in the BRP . You must have previously changed your gender in your birth certificate. You can do this in the municipality where you were born.

Adoption

Have you been adopted? If so, the municipality may change or remove the following information:

  • your name
  • information about 1 or both parents
  • the nationality you had before the adoption
  • pre-adoption address information
  • pre-adoption immigration and emigration data

Have you relinquished a child for adoption? Then the municipality can change or remove the child's information from your personal data.

Requirements

The Requirements for updating your information in the BRP are:

  • You are registered with the municipality.
  • If your information in the BRP is incorrect, you must be able to prove it. You must also be able to prove what the correct data is.

Requirements for changing or deleting after adoption or gender change are:

  • These are pre-adoption or gender reassignment records.
  • The adoption or sex change is completed.
  • You are 16 years of age or older.

Are you under the age of 16? Then your parent, guardian or caregiver can make the request if it is for gender reassignment.

Were you adopted yourself? Then your adoptive parents may not have your records removed. You may only do that yourself, from the age of 16.

Term

The municipality will decide within 4 weeks on changing the data. Does it involve data about your marital status or nationality? Then the municipality can extend the period by 8 weeks. Removing data from before an adoption or sex change is done within 4 weeks.

Does this period take too long? For example, because you receive fines due to the incorrect data? Ask for help from the Reporting Point for Errors in Government Records.

Objection and appeal

Was there an error in your data? And won't the municipality correct it? Report it to the Errors in Government Records hotline. The hotline will investigate the situation and contact the municipality for you.

Does the municipality refuse to change your data? Then you can also object. By doing so, you let it be known why you do not agree. An objection must be made within 6 weeks. The municipality will then make a new decision.

Do you disagree with that new decision? Then you can ask the court whether the municipality made a good decision. This is called "appealing. Do that within 6 weeks. You can only appeal if you have objected.
