Update data in basic registration of persons (BRP)

Everyone living in the Netherlands must be registered in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP). Are your details in the BRP incorrect? Or do you want to have your details changed or removed after an adoption or sex change? If so, please report this to the municipality in which you live.

Approach

This is how you report a change of incorrect data in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP):

  • Make an appointment with the municipality.
  • Come to the appointment and bring:
    • your valid ID
    • proof of the incorrect information, such as a letter showing your name in error
    • proof of proper records, such as proof of divorce or birth certificate

This is how you request a change or deletion of records after adoption or gender reassignment:

  • You send your application to the municipality.
  • With your application, please send along:
    • A copy of your valid ID
    • proving the correct data
    • for data on sex change: an expert statement

Adjustment of data BRP due to event abroad

Do you want to update your data in the BRP? And does the official document required to do so come from abroad? For example, because you got married abroad? Then you may need to have the document translated. There are 3 possibilities:

  1. The document is written in Dutch, French, German or English.
Then take this document with you. You do not need to have anything translated.
  2. The document is not written in Dutch, German, French, or English. And the document comes from an EU country.
Then bring this document with you, and a multilingual model form of the document. A multilingual model form is a translation of the document. You apply for it in that other EU country.
Is there no multilingual model form of the document? Then you must have the document translated, and bring it with you to the appointment.
  3. The document is not written in Dutch, German, French or English. And the document is not from an EU country.
Then have the document translated by an official translator and bring it with you to the appointment.

You can read more about using documents from abroad at Nederlandwereldwijd.nl.

Cost

Updating BRP data is free of charge.

Description

The Basic Registration of Persons (BRP) contains your personal data such as your address, marital status, gender and nationality. Some data are updated automatically. For example, if you get married in the Netherlands. Other data you provide yourself, such as a change of address.

You can view your data on MijnOverheid.nl. Are your details in the BRP incorrect, or no longer correct? Report the change immediately to the municipality. The municipality will then adjust your data.

Were you adopted or did you give a child up for adoption? Or have you changed gender? At your request, the municipality can change or remove data from before the adoption or gender change.

After adoption, the municipality can change or remove these details:

  • If you have been adopted
    • your name
    • information about 1 or both parents
    • nationality lost in adoption
    • pre-adoption address information
    • pre-adoption immigration and emigration data
  • If you have given a child up for adoption
    • the details of the child

After gender change, the municipality can change or remove this information:

  • your name
  • your sex
  • Using the last name of your (ex-)spouse or (ex-)registered partner

Do you have an adopted child under the age of 16? Or are you adopted yourself? If so, you can have data deleted. This is only possible if the data is from before the adoption. This is also possible with data from before gender reassignment.

Terms

The conditions for updating your information in the BRP are:

  • You are registered with the municipality.
  • If your information in the BRP is incorrect, you must be able to prove it. You must also be able to prove what the correct data is.

The conditions for changing or removing records after adoption or sex change are:

  • These are pre-adoption or gender reassignment records.
  • The adoption or sex change is completed.
  • You are 16 years of age or older.

Are you under the age of 16? Then your parent, guardian or caregiver can make the request if it is for gender reassignment.

Were you adopted yourself? Then your adoptive parents may not have your records removed. You may only do that yourself, from the age of 16.

Term

The municipality will decide within 4 weeks on changing the data. Does it involve data about your marital status or nationality? Then the municipality can extend the period by 8 weeks. Removing data from before an adoption or sex change is done within 4 weeks.

Does this period take too long? For example, because you receive fines due to the incorrect data? Ask for help from the Reporting Point for Errors in Government Records.

Objection and appeal

If the municipality does not make your changes, you can object within 6 weeks.

Can't the municipality correct your records? Report it to the Errors in Government Records Hotline
