Update data in basic registration of persons (BRP)

Everyone living in the Netherlands must be registered in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP). Are your details in the BRP incorrect? Or do you want your details changed or removed following an adoption or gender reassignment? Please notify the municipality in which you live.

Approach

This is how you report a change of incorrect data in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP):

  • Come in person to the municipality where you are registered.
  • You bring:
    • your valid ID
    • proof of the erroneous information, such as a letter showing your name in error
    • proof of proper records, such as proof of divorce or birth certificate

This is how you request a change or deletion of records after adoption or gender reassignment:

  • You submit a written application to the municipality in which you are registered.
  • With your application, please send along:
    • A copy of your valid ID
    • proof of correct data
    • for data on sex change: an expert statement

Were you born abroad and have the Dutch nationality? Then apply to municipality The Hague.

Deeds and evidence from a country within the European Union:

  • You must also have a multilingual model form for each deed.
  • Are the supporting documents not in Dutch, English, French or German? Then a sworn translator must translate them. Documents sometimes need to be legalized or have an apostille.

Deeds and supporting documents from a country outside the European Union:

  • If the deeds or supporting documents are not in Dutch, English, French or German, you must have them translated by a sworn interpreter or translator. In addition, you must have some foreign documents legalized or they must contain an apostille.

Cost

Updating BRP data is free of charge.

Description

The Basic Registration of Persons (BRP) contains your personal data such as your current address, marital status, gender and nationality. Some data are updated automatically. For example, if you get married in the Netherlands. Other data you provide yourself, such as a change of address.

You can view your data on MijnOverheid.nl. Are your details in the BRP incorrect or no longer correct? Report the change immediately to municipality. The municipality will then update your data.

Were you adopted or did you give a child up for adoption? Or have you changed gender? The municipality can change or remove information from before the adoption or gender change at your request.

After adoption, the municipality can change or remove these details:

  • If you have been adopted
    • your name
    • information about one or both parents
    • nationality lost in adoption
    • pre-adoption address information
    • pre-adoption immigration and emigration data
  • If you have given a child up for adoption
    • the details of the child

After gender change, the municipality can change or remove these details:

  • your name
  • your sex
  • Using the last name of your (ex-)spouse or (ex-)registered partner

Do you have an adopted child under the age of 16? Or are you adopted yourself? If so, you can have data deleted. This is only possible if the data is from before the adoption. This is also possible with data from before gender reassignment.

Terms

If your information in the BRP is incorrect, you must be able to prove it. You must also be able to prove what the correct data is.

The conditions for changing or removing records after adoption or sex change are:

  • There is adoption or gender reassignment.
  • These are pre-adoption or gender reassignment records.
  • The adoption or sex change is completed.
  • You are 16 years of age or older.

Are you under the age of 16? Then your parent, guardian or caregiver can make the request if it is for sex change.
Were you adopted yourself? Then your adoptive parents may not have your information removed. You may only do that yourself, starting at age 16.

Term

The municipality decides on changing the data within 4 weeks. Does it involve data about your marital status or nationality? Then the municipality can extend the deadline by 8 weeks. Removing data from before an adoption or sex change is done within 4 weeks.

Does this deadline take too long? For example, because you receive fines because of the incorrect data? Ask for help from the Errors in Government Records Hotline.

Objection and appeal

If the municipality does not make your changes, you can object within 6 weeks.

Can't the municipality correct your records? File a report with the Errors in Government Records Hotline.
