Modify data in the Personal Records Database (BRP)

Everyone who lives in the Netherlands must be registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP). Are your details in the BRP ? Or do you want to change your details after a gender change or adoption? If so, please notify the municipality in which you live.

Approach

This is how you report incorrect or outdated information in the Personal Records Database (BRP):

  • Contact the municipality. The municipality will tell you whether you can submit the change online or whether you need to make an appointment. They will also tell you what evidence you need to provide.

Adjustment of BRP data BRP document from abroad

Is the official document you need coming from abroad? For example, because you got married abroad? Then you may need to have the document translated. There are three options:

  1. The document is in Dutch, French, German, or English.
Then bring this document with you. You do not need to have anything translated.
  2. The document is not in Dutch, German, French, or English. And the document comes from an EU country.
Then take this document with you, along with a multilingual model form of the document. A multilingual model form is a translation of the document. You can request this in that other EU country.
If you do not have a multilingual model form of the document, you will need to have the document translated and bring it with you to the appointment.
  3. The document is not in Dutch, German, French, or English. And the document does not originate from an EU country.
Then have the document translated by an official translator and bring it with you to the appointment.

Apply for a new passport, new identity card, or new driver's license

Are you changing your first name, last name, gender, or date of birth? If so, your passport, identity card, or driver's license will no longer be valid. You will therefore need to apply for a new passport, identity card, or driver's license.

Costs

Modifying BRP is free of charge.

Description

The Personal Records Database (BRP) contains your personal data, such as your address, gender, nationality, and marital status. Some data is updated automatically, for example if you get married in the Netherlands. Other data is provided by you, such as when you move house.

You can view your details at MijnOverheid.nl. Are your details in the BRP ? Notify the municipality of the change immediately. The municipality will then update your details.

Gender reassignment

After your gender reassignment, you can BRP the information from before the gender reassignment removed from the BRP . This means that your old name and your previous gender will no longer BRP in the BRP . You must first have your gender reassignment recorded in your birth certificate. You can do this in the municipality where you were born.

Adoption

Were you adopted? If so, the municipality can change or remove the following information:

  • your name
  • information about one or both parents
  • the nationality you had before the adoption
  • address details prior to adoption
  • data on immigration and emigration prior to adoption

Have you given up a child for adoption? If so, the municipality can change or remove the child's details from your personal data.

Requirements

The Requirements changing your details in the BRP :

  • You are registered with the municipality.
  • If your details in the BRP are BRP , you must be able to prove this. You must also be able to demonstrate what the correct details are.

The Requirements changing or removing data after adoption or gender reassignment are:

  • This concerns data from before the adoption or gender reassignment.
  • The adoption or gender reassignment has been completed.
  • You are 16 years of age or older.

Are you younger than 16? Then your parent, guardian, or caregiver can submit the request if it concerns a gender change.

Were you adopted yourself? Then your adoptive parents are not allowed to have your data removed. Only you can do that, once you reach the age of 16.

Term

The municipality will decide on changing the data within four weeks. Does the data concern your marital status or nationality? In that case, the municipality may extend the period by eight weeks. Data relating to adoption or gender reassignment will be removed within four weeks.

Is this period taking too long? For example, because you are receiving fines due to incorrect data? Request assistance from the Government Registration Errors Hotline at.

Objections and appeals

Was there an error in your data? And does the municipality refuse to correct it? Report it to the Government Registration Errors Hotline. The hotline will investigate the situation and contact the municipality on your behalf.

Is the municipality refusing to change your details? If so, you can also lodge an objection. This allows you to explain why you disagree. Objections must be lodged within six weeks. The municipality will then make a new decision.

Do you disagree with the new decision? Then you can ask the court whether the municipality has made the right decision. This is called 'appealing'. You must do this within six weeks. You can only appeal if you have lodged an objection.
