Gravestone or memorial placement

You do not need a permit to place a memorial at a grave, such as a headstone, plaque or grave garden. However, the memorial must meet a few conditions.

Approach

Usually, the stonemason or funeral director applies for the permit from the cemetery owner.

Want to do it yourself? Here's how to apply for a permit to place a keepsake in a municipal cemetery:

  • You make your application to the municipality
  • You provide the following information:
    • your name and address
    • the grave number
    • What the memorial looks like (e.g., size, material and text)

Cost

For costs, see: Burial Rates. If you have questions about the fees, please contact the municipality.

Description

At the grave of a deceased person, you may place a memorial, such as a headstone, plaque or grave garden. You do not need a permit for this, but the memorial must meet a number of conditions.

In Heerlen, you can also have a memorial plaque placed at the urn wall.

Terms

The conditions for placing a headstone are:

  • You place the keepsake within the space of the grave.
  • You follow the rules of the cemetery.
  • Issuance of the grave has been assigned and you have paid for it.
  • You remain the applicant and therefore responsible for your application and payment.
  • When paying, always include the correct payment reference.

For conditions, see the grave cover implementation decree.
