Gravestone or memorial placement

You do not need a permit to place a memorial at a grave, such as a gravestone, memorial plaque or grave garden. The memorial must meet a few Requirements to fulfil.

Approach

Usually, the stonemason or funeral director applies for the permit from the cemetery owner.

Want to do it yourself? Here's how to apply for a permit to place a keepsake in a municipal cemetery:

  • You make your application to the municipality
  • You provide the following information:
    • your name and address
    • the grave number
    • What the memorial looks like (e.g., size, material and text)

Cost

For the costs, see: Burial rates If you have any questions about the rate, please contact the municipality.

Description

At the grave of a deceased person you may place a memento, such as a gravestone, memorial plaque or grave garden. You do not need a permit for this, but the monument must meet a number of Requirements to fulfil.

In Heerlen, you can also have a memorial plaque placed at the urn wall.

Requirements

The Requirements to place a gravestone are:

  • You place the keepsake within the space of the grave.
  • You follow the rules of the cemetery.
  • Issuance of the grave has been assigned and you have paid for it.
  • You remain the applicant and therefore responsible for your application and payment.
  • When paying, always include the correct payment reference.

Look for the Requirements with the implementation decree on grave coverings.
