Heerlen further expands sustainability offensive
The municipality of Heerlen is expanding its sustainability initiative to help even more households make their homes more energy efficient. With the revised Local Insulation Approach (LAI), more residents are eligible for the subsidy, while two new schemes—for DIYers and homeowners' associations—offer additional support. In total, approximately 6,800 homes can benefit from the scheme, including the new target group of mixed associations.

Since September, the energy-saving coaches from the WoonWijzerWinkel Limburg have been going door-to-door in all neighborhoods as part of the Heerlen Verduurzaamt campaign. They offer residents a free smart meter and immediately discuss which insulation options are suitable for the home and the resident's situation. The approach is working: by the end of December, the municipality expects to have both the 1,000th registration and the 500th energy-saving plan.
More homes eligible due to higher WOZ threshold
The WOZ threshold for the subsidy will be raised from €219,000 to €260,000. This will allow a much larger group of Heerlen residents to take advantage of the scheme.
Expansion for DIY enthusiasts and homeowners' associations
DIY enthusiasts can receive a subsidy of up to €4,000 for owner-occupiers who carry out insulation measures themselves. In addition, mixed associations (homeowners' associations, housing associations, and housing cooperatives) can count on support of up to €4,000 per poorly insulated home for insulation and ventilation of buildings.
"No one should be left out in the cold, literally or figuratively. With our sustainability offensive, we are lowering barriers and offering real support to residents who want to improve their homes. With this expansion of the sustainability offensive, we are making it possible for even more households in Heerlen to insulate their homes and save energy. In this way, we are building a sustainable and energy-fair future for Heerlen," says Alderman Casper Gelderblom.
Heerlen Becomes More Sustainable
The campaign will run until the end of 2026. Residents who were previously ineligible but are now eligible under the new rules will be contacted again. All information can be found on our website page about insulation subsidies.
