Dutch driving license renewal or exchange abroad

Dutch nationals living in another EU country must have their driving license exchanged there.

Approach

How to exchange your driver's license:

  • Go to the government issuing driver's licenses.
  • Ask what documents are needed to get a driver's license from the country where you live.
  • Do this well before your driver's license expires.

Description

Has your Dutch driving license (almost) expired and do you live outside the Netherlands? In that case you can renew or exchange your driving license for a driving license from your country of residence. What you need to do depends on where you live. An example of a document requested by the government is a document from RDW with categories of your driving license.

Have you lost your driver's license or has it been stolen? Then you must also show a proof of declaration. You will then need a certificate of authenticity to apply for a new driver's license.

Terms

  • You can only exchange the driving license A, B, and BE in Germany. Do you have a driving license for buses or trucks? Then different rules apply. Check with your local authorities.
  • You live in a country within the EU.
