Renewing or exchanging a Dutch driver's license abroad

Dutch citizens living in another EU country must exchange their driver's license there.

Approach

How to exchange your driver's license:

  • Go to the government agency that issues driver's licenses.
  • Ask what documents are required to obtain a driver's license in the country where you live.
  • Do this well before your driver's license expires.

Description

Is your Dutch driver's license (almost) expired and do you live outside the Netherlands? Then you can renew your driver's license or exchange it for a driver's license from your country of residence. What you need to do depends on where you live. An example of a document requested by the government is a document from the RDW (Dutch Vehicle Authority) listing the categories of your driver's license.

Have you lost your driver's license or has it been stolen? Then you must also show a police report. You will need a certificate of authenticity to apply for a new driver's license.

Requirements

  • You can only exchange driving licenses A, B, and BE in Germany. Do you have a driving license for buses or trucks? Then different rules apply. Please contact your local government.
  • You live in a country within the EU.
