License renewal or extension
Will your driver's license expire soon? Or do you want to extend your license with a category? You arrange the renewal or extension online. Or through the municipality.
Note
Did you already have a B license (the license that allows you to drive a car) before July 1, 2015? Then that also allows you to drive a tractor. Do you renew that driver's license before July 1, 2025? Then the T category will be added to your new license. Are you renewing July 1, 2025 or later? Then the T category will expire.
Approach
You can apply for a new driver's license in 2 ways: online at RDW, or at the municipality.
Online at RDW
- You have a passport photo taken by an RDW photographer or an RDW photo booth. Note: Are you going to a photo booth? Then take your driving license number with you, just to be sure. Some photo booths require you to enter your driver's license number.
- At the photographer or photo booth, you also put your signature.
- The photographer or photo booth sends your passport photo and signature to RDW.
- RDW will send you an e-mail or text message.
- Click the "Renew Driver's License" button and follow the steps.
- Pick up your driver's license after a notice at the municipality. Bring your old driver's license with you.
At the municipality
- You make an appointment with the municipality to renew or extend.
- You come to the appointment and bring with you:
- your old driving license
- possibly a health certificate. Request it online from CBR.
- a passport photo that meets the requirements. For example, you can have your photo taken at an RDW photographer.
