Making an appointment

Approach

You can apply for a new driver's license in two ways: online at RDW, or at the municipality.

Online at RDW

  • You go to a approved photographer:
    • You have a passport photo taken.
    • You put your signature.
    • You provide your e-mail address.
    • You pay the cost for this to the photographer.
    • The photographer sends your photo and signature digitally to RDW.
  • RDW will send you an e-mail. This will tell you whether you can renew your driver's license online.
  • Go to the RDW website.
    • Log in with the DigiD app (with ID check).
    • Fill in the details.
    • You pay for the driver's license via iDEAL.
  • You will receive an e-mail from RDW after 2 working days. This will tell you when you can pick up your driver's license at the municipality.
  • You will pick up your driver's license at the municipality. Bring your current driver's license with you. You turn it in.
  • Get your driver's license within 3 months. After that, this is no longer possible. You must then make a new application.

At the municipality

  • You go to a licensed photographer and have a passport photo taken.
  • You make an appointment with the municipality to renew or extend.

Health Statement

Sometimes you need a health certificate if you want to renew or extend your driver's license. For example, if you are 75 years old or older. Or when you have a truck driving license. Read on the CBR website when you need a health certificate.

You do not need to make an appointment to pick up your driver's license.

Cost

A driver's license costs €51.11.

The cost of the passport photo varies by photographer.

Renew

Is your driver's license about to expire? And do you want to continue driving in the near future? Then you must renew your license. You can do this online at RDW. Or you can visit the municipality. You will receive a new license.

Expand

Do you already have a driver's license? And have you passed a driving test for another vehicle, or for driving with a trailer? Then you can apply for a driving license that includes the new category. You can do this online at RDW. Or you can visit the municipality.

The RDW website lists the categories for which you can get a driver's license.

Terms

The main requirements for renewing your license or applying for a new category online are:

  • You have a Dutch driver's license.
  • You are applying for a license renewal or category extension.
  • You apply for the additional category within 3 years of your driving test. Otherwise, you must take the exam again.
  • You are registered with the municipality.
  • You have added the ID check to the DigiD app. You can find a handy step-by-step plan for this on the DigiD website.
  • You can do online banking with iDEAL.

Do you not live in the Netherlands? Then the following conditions also apply to you:

  • You live in another EU country for your studies.
    You are not a student? Then exchange your driving license for a driving license of the country where you live.
  • Or you live in a country outside the EU and:
    • You are not registered at an address in the Netherlands
    • you have the nationality of an EU/EFTA country
    • there is an address in the Netherlands where you can receive mail
