Leaving the Netherlands (emigrating)

Do you live in the Netherlands and are you moving to another country? You must report this to the municipality if you are moving to another country for more than 8 months within a period of 1 year.

Notify the municipality of your move abroad no later than 5 days in advance.

Approach

Notifying authorities of your departure to another country:

You can often do this online using DigiD or in person at the service desk. Be sure to provide your new address abroad.
If only you (or your entire family) are moving, you can often do this online. If only some of your family members are moving, you may need to visit the service desk.

  • Submit your report online at least 5 days before your departure.
  • Will any family members remain at your address in the Netherlands?
    • Please come to the front desk with a valid form of identification.
  • Are there any family members left behind at your address in the Netherlands?
    • Please submit this online.

Description

If you move to another country, you must report the move to the municipality. You must report the move if you are going to another country for more than 8 months in a period of 1 year. These 8 months do not have to be consecutive. Even if you keep your house in the Netherlands, you must report the move to the municipality.

Are you staying abroad for less than 8 months? Then you can report your move, but you don't have to.

The municipality will notify the authorities that are connected to the Personal Records Database (BRP) of your move. These include the Tax and Customs Administration and pension funds.
