Leaving the Netherlands (emigrating)

Do you live in the Netherlands and are you moving to another country? You must report this to the municipality if you are moving to another country for more than 8 months within a period of 1 year.

Notify the municipality of your move abroad at least 5 days in advance. You can do this digitally if everyone at your address is moving with you. If residents are remaining at the address, you cannot report the move online.

Approach

How to report your departure to another country:

  • You must submit your notification within 5 days prior to your departure.
  • Are any family members remaining at your current address in the Netherlands?
    • You visit the municipality.
    • You do this together with all family members who are moving abroad with you. This includes children, if you have any.
    • Everyone must bring valid identification.

Description

If you move to another country, you must report the move to the municipality. You must report the move if you are going to another country for more than 8 months in a period of 1 year. These 8 months do not have to be consecutive. Even if you keep your house in the Netherlands, you must report the move to the municipality.

Are you staying abroad for less than 8 months? Then you can report your move, but you don't have to.

The municipality will notify the authorities that are connected to the Personal Records Database (BRP) of your move. These include the Tax and Customs Administration and pension funds.
