Leaving the Netherlands (emigrating).

Are you living in the Netherlands and moving to another country? You report this to municipality if you move to another country for more than 8 months in a period of 1 year.

Notify municipality of your move abroad no more than 5 days in advance. You can do this digitally if everyone at your address is moving with you. If there are residents remaining at the address then you cannot report the move online.  

Approach

This is how you report your departure to another country:

  • You make the notification within 5 days before your departure.
  • Do any family members remain at your current address in the Netherlands?
    • You will visit the municipality.
    • You do this together with all family members who are moving abroad with you. This includes children, if there are any.
    • Each person brings a valid ID.
  • Do no family members remain at your current address in the Netherlands?
    • You make your report in writing.
    • You attach a copy of your valid ID.
  • You pass on:
    • in which country you will be staying
    • what your first address is (with city name)
    • the date you are moving

If you fail to report your departure abroad, municipality may impose a fine on you.

Do you need proof of deregistration? Request this from an RNI-municipality. These municipalities are Alkmaar, Almelo, Amsterdam, Breda, The Hague, Doetinchem, Eindhoven, Groningen, Goes, Heerlen, Leeuwarden, Leiden, Nijmegen, Rotterdam, Terneuzen, Utrecht, Venlo, Westland and Zwolle.

  • communicating a relocation is free of charge
  • Requesting a proof of deregistration online costs €12.30
  • Requesting a certificate of deregistration in writing or at the counter costs €19.60

Description

If you move to another country, report the move to municipality. You must report if you move to another country for more than 8 months in a 1-year period. These 8 months do not have to be consecutive. You must also report the move to municipality if you keep your home in the Netherlands.

Are you abroad for less than 8 months? Then you can report the move, but you don't have to.

The municipality notifies your move to the agencies connected to the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP). For example, the Tax Office and pension funds.

Terms

The notification can be made by:

  • yourself, if you are 16 years of age or older
  • parent, guardian or caregiver for minor children
  • cohabiting spouses/registered partners for each other (only if they move to the new address together)
  • cohabiting parents and adult children for each other (only if they move to the new address together)
  • the trustee for a person placed under supervision (guardianship)

Term

The date on which the municipality registers your move abroad in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP) is the day on which you report the move to us. You can do this up to 5 days before the move.
