Heerlen accelerates housing construction

Heerlen accelerates housing construction

Heerlen is growing again. More and more people are moving to our city, both from the Netherlands and abroad. At the same time, we see that the housing supply is out of balance. There are many affordable rental and owner-occupied homes, but too few homes in the middle and higher segments. That is why the municipality wants to build new and more diverse types of homes.

Homes for everyone!

Thanks to the new homes, we are preventing residents of Heerlen who want to live in larger homes from leaving. Professionals who work here can also find suitable housing this way.

What kind of homes are we building?

We build rental and owner-occupied homes for people with middle and higher incomes, as well as lifetime homes. New social housing is only built in neighborhoods where there is currently a shortage. We collaborate with housing associations, developers, and investors on these projects.

What do we want to achieve?

Housing is more than just a roof over your head. It is the foundation for healthy growth. With a better housing supply, Heerlen residents can stay and we can attract new residents. This strengthens our neighborhoods, education, economy, and opportunities for future generations.

The municipality wants to achieve this through accelerated construction (housing pillar Investing), but also through the other two housing pillars:

  • Housing pillar Cherish. This means that we retain our residents and talent. Workers, young people, and key professionals are given the opportunity to continue living in Heerlen. In this way, we keep people with important professions in the city and ensure that the city remains strong.
  • Regulating the housing pillar. This means that we are improving the balance in our neighborhoods. We ensure that poverty is not concentrated in one area. This keeps neighborhoods livable and pleasant to live in.

Together, we call these the three pillars of housing. See also the pages on buying, renting, and letting for information about living in Heerlen.

Who are we building for?

In new housing projects, we focus primarily on groups that make Heerlen stronger and more future-proof:

  • Heerlen residents who want to move to a new home, such as families or those looking to upgrade.
  • People who work or study in Heerlen or Parkstad, but do not yet live here.
  • Newcomers who can contribute to the city, for example through social engagement or financial capacity.
