You file for divorce with the court. Then your lawyer, yourself or your former partner reports the divorce to the municipality where you were married.

Approach

This is how you report a divorce:

  • You are filing for divorce with the court. You will need a lawyer to do this.
  • The lawyer makes a request to the court.
  • Your lawyer will send the court's decision to municipality. You can also report it yourself to municipality. Your former partner may also do this. You do this at the municipality where you were married.
  • You will send the following documents to the municipality:
    • a written request for entry in the register of civil status
    • proof of the court ruling (the divorce decree)
    • proof that you are not appealing the judge's decision (the deeds of acquiescence)

Are you and your partner getting divorced or separated? If so, this could affect your taxes. Complete the personal divorce checklist at the tax office or visit belastingdienst.nl/scheiden to see where you stand and what you need to arrange (now).
