Walking dogs

You may not walk your dog everywhere. Nor may your dog run loose everywhere.

The municipality Heerlen has off-leash areas and exercise areas. These are places where the dog can run freely and do his business. The exercise areas are regularly cleaned by municipality . You can recognize them by the fences that surround them.
Outside these areas, you must keep your dog on a leash to prevent nuisance.

Approach

When you walk your dog, you must clean up the dog poop yourself. Special dog waste bags are available, or you use a sandwich bag. Dispose of the bag in the trash can or a special bin. This way you help keep the streets and playgrounds clean.
You can pick up dog waste bags for free at the supermarket.

Cost

  • The fine for not leashing the dog is €100.00
  • The fine for not leashing in e.g. a playground is €140.00 

Terms

The rules for walking your dog are:

  • Within built-up areas, keep your dog on a leash.
  • You only let your dog run loose in special off-leash areas.
  • You keep your dog away from playgrounds, playing fields and sandboxes (even if your dog is on a leash).
  • You keep your dog away from cemeteries and flower beds from the municipality.
  • You clean up your dog's poop yourself.
