Walking dogs

You are not allowed to walk your dog everywhere. Your dog is also not allowed to run free everywhere.

The municipality of Heerlen has designated areas and places where dogs can run freely and relieve themselves. These areas are regularly cleaned by the municipality. You can recognize them by the fences surrounding them.
Outside these designated areas or places, you must keep your dog on a leash to prevent nuisance.

Approach

When walking your dog, you must clean up after it. Special dog waste bags are available, or you can use a sandwich bag. Dispose of the bag in a trash can or special waste bin. This will help keep the streets and playgrounds clean.
You can pick up dog waste bags for free at the supermarket.

Costs

You may be fined if you do not comply with the rules. In addition, you will have to pay administrative costs.

  • Is your dog running loose within the built-up area? Then the fine is €110.00.
  • Is your dog running loose in a playground? Then the fine is €170.00.

Requirements

The rules for walking your dog are:

  • Keep your dog on a leash within built-up areas.
  • You may only let your dog run free in designated exercise areas.
  • Keep your dog away from playgrounds, play areas, and sandboxes (even if your dog is on a leash).
  • You must keep your dog away from municipal cemeteries and flower beds.
  • You clean up after your dog yourself.
