Do you want to keep a lot of animals? For example in a petting zoo or animal shelter? Then report this to the municipality.

You do not get an exemption for keeping protected species. Shelters, animal shelters and zoos have exemptions to this prohibition.

This is how you file a notification for keeping many animals:

  • Go to the Environment Counter.
  • Do the permit check.
  • You will see if you need to file a notification.
  • Login:
    • for yourself: with DigiD
    • For a company: with eRecognition
  • Among other things, you pass on:
    • information about what you are going to do
    • information about the area where you will keep the animals
    • information about the animal enclosures

Description

If you want to keep more than 5 mammals or more than 25 birds, you must first report it to the municipality. This involves keeping animals for educational and recreational purposes. Such as a petting zoo, deer park or riding school. But also when it comes to breeding and sheltering pets. Such as an animal shelter or dog farm.

If you keep several wild or rare animals on your property, you also need a zoo permit. You can apply for this at the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland.

Terms

The conditions are:

  • You must follow the rules of municipality for keeping animals.
  • As the owner or caregiver, you must give the animals proper care.
  • The animals should have adequate space appropriate to their natural needs.

Term

You make a notification at least 4 weeks before you start keeping animals on your property.
