Request a mailing address

Do you not have a permanent place of residence or domicile, or are you going abroad for less than 8 months? You may be able to register at a correspondence address.

You can temporarily receive your mail at an address other than where you live. For example, because you do not have a home. You can apply for a mailing address at the municipality.

Do you already have an address that you can use as a mailing address?

  • You should contact the municipality where the correspondence address is located.
  • You will need to bring:
    • your own valid proof of identity
    • the written consent of the main occupant or owner of the mailing address
    • a copy of the valid ID of the main occupant or owner of the registered address

Are you unable to obtain a mailing address yourself?

  • You contact the municipality where you want the mailing address.
  • You provide:
    • Why you need a mailing address
    • how long you need the mailing address
  • You will need to bring:
    • your own valid proof of identity

Description

Don't have a residential address? Or are you temporarily living in an institution? Then you can register with your municipality at a mailing address. Government agencies, such as the UWV or the Tax and Customs Administration, will send your mail to this address.

You can use the address of, for example, an acquaintance or family member as your mailing address. The recipient must ensure that the mail is forwarded to you. You must apply to the municipality to use the mailing address.

Are you unable to obtain a mailing address yourself? The municipality will assist you with this.

The (main) occupant of the mailing address gives written permission for registration at the residential address. This ensures that you can be contacted.

If you move abroad, you cannot keep a correspondence address in the Netherlands. If you live outside the Netherlands for at least two-thirds of the year, you are required to notify the municipality of your departure from the Netherlands and your address abroad. 

Requirements

The main Requirements requesting a mailing address are:

  • You have a valid reason for your request. It may be that you:
    • (temporarily) homeless
    • you are a skipper and are away from home for up to 2 consecutive years for your work
    • is in prison
    • lives in a psychiatric institution
    • lives in a women's shelter or other refuge
    • is threatened or, for other security reasons, do not want your address to be known
  • You have Dutch nationality or a valid residence permit.

Can you obtain a mailing address yourself? If so, these are the Requirements the mailing address:

  • The mailing address is in the Netherlands.
  • The mailing address is not postbus.
  • The main occupant or owner must give written permission at the public service desk of the town hall. He must therefore accompany you.
