Authorize someone to vote for you in elections

You can authorize someone to vote for you. You can authorize someone with your voting card. 

Approach

This is how you authorize someone through your voting card:

  • Fill in the information on the back of the voting card.
  • Put your signature.
  • The proxy also provides a signature. The proxy is the person who will vote on your behalf.
  • Provide the proxy with a copy of your ID. Your proof of identity must not have expired for more than 5 years on the day of the election. The proxy may also show the copy on a smartphone or tablet. However, the copy must be legible.
  • The proxy takes your voting card and the copy of your ID to a polling station to vote.

This is how you issue a written power of attorney:

  • Complete the online form.
  • Your application must be in by Friday, Oct. 24, 2025.
  • The proxy will receive the proxy certificate at home.
  • The proxy votes with the proxy card.

Description

If you cannot vote yourself, you can authorize someone. This means that you authorize someone else to vote for you. 

  • You authorize someone through your voting card (private proxy). This is only possible if the authorized person votes in the same municipality as you.
  • Are you temporarily abroad, but are you still registered with a Dutch municipality? Then you can also authorize someone to vote for you.

Requirements

The person who will vote for you

  • may vote for up to 2 other people
  • must cast your vote at the same time as your own vote
  • Must show authorization(s) when voting
  • Must identify themselves when voting
  • Must be registered in the same municipality as you (when authorizing via voting card)
