  • 26 Mayors in Limburg Anticipate Problems with New Fireworks Rules

    Starting August 1, 2026, a nationwide fireworks ban will take effect. As of then, you will no longer be allowed to buy, sell, or set off consumer fireworks in the Netherlands.

  • Enforcement of the Bicycle Ban in Heerlen City Center

    Starting in April 2026, the City of Heerlen tightened bicycle regulations for a large part of downtown Heerlen. Bicycles are now prohibited in certain areas. The City of Heerlen’s Monitoring and Enforcement Department, in collaboration with the police, conducts regular checks. Last week, on June 16, 17, and 18, 101 people received an official warning and 15 people were issued a ticket.

  • 81 new homes in the Geerstraat office building

    A vacant office building on Geerstraat is set to be repurposed as a residential complex. The municipality of Heerlen and Wonen Limburg have signed an agreement to this effect.

    The municipality of Heerlen is offering building lots for sale on Heisterberg. We will demolish the existing structures (numbers 27, 27a, and 31) prior to the transfer of ownership.

  • New Herle College Design Complete

    SVO|PL and the municipality of Heerlen have finalized the design for the new Herle College. We now know what the new school building will look like. The building will be located in Stadspark Oranje-Nassau in Heerlen.

  • On May 30, Heerlen City Center will be transformed into a giant playground

    On Saturday, May 30, the center of Heerlen will turn into a playground. The event will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This is the fourth time we’ve organized this event.

  • Youth Education Fund grant to continue in 2027

    The municipality of Heerlen has been collaborating with the Youth Education Fund (JEF) since 2017. This fund helps children growing up in poverty. Their talent does not determine how far they will go; their home situation does.
    A three-year pilot program will conclude at the end of 2026. This pilot was successful. That is why the municipality wants to continue the partnership. Currently, 14 schools are participating. More schools are expected to join in the future.

    The City of Heerlen and Woonpunt have agreed to renovate the Kasteelbuurt neighborhood. They want to make the neighborhood more attractive and better suited for the future.
