The former DSM headquarters at Het Overloon 1 is being repurposed. Wonen Limburg, together with the municipality of Heerlen, has chosen construction and development partner Laudy to redevelop this site. The municipality is collaborating with Wonen Limburg on this plan. The provisional name of the project is Hof van Heerlen.
Residents receive extra support if they participate in society. The municipality of Heerlen receives a subsidy for this from the European Union Social Inclusion (ESF+). This money will be used to start a project that supports residents. The project will run from October 2023 to October 2027 and will help residents find structure, get their financial affairs in order, or become (re)active in society.
In January, a large group of companies and government agencies gathered at Arion in Heerlen. They discussed how to improve access to the Avantis and Trilandis business parks. Companies from the Netherlands and Germany are participating in this joint effort.

Internationally renowned architect and urban planner Jo Coenen will be working as an advisor-supervisor for the Hoensbroek-Centrum area development. This means that he will be designing and providing urban planning advice on the development of Hoensbroek-Centrum. As supervisor, he will monitor the quality of all plans for Hoensbroek-Centrum.
Educational institutions, transfer points, and municipalities in South Limburg are joining forces in a regional program. This program supports young people up to the age of 27 in obtaining a basic qualification, finding suitable further education or work, and actively participating in society.
On January 16, 2026, Professor Jac Rinkes of Heerlen was awarded the royal distinction of Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau on the occasion of his retirement. Through his long-standing commitment, Mr. Rinkes has made a special contribution to society and to legal science.
On January 18, volunteers Christie Augustus-Jans, Ger Pappers, and Patrick Beckers were appointed Members of the Order of Orange-Nassau. Mayor Roel Wever the decorations on behalf of King Willem-Alexander to the three volunteers, who have each been active for decades in organizations such as the Royal St. Sebastiaan Heerlerheide Shooting Club. The presentation took place during the annual Patroonfeest festival.
