On October 12, Brede Maatschappelijke Voorziening (BMV) Heerlerbaan will open. The BMV on Vullingsweg is a home for all kinds of social activities in the areas of education, health, care, welfare, culture and exercise. The users have moved in over the past few weeks. We are proud to open the BMV to partners, parents and local residents.
Municipality of Heerlen is the first municipality to participate in a pilot program of Rijkswaterstaat for sustainable road surface maintenance with the Asphalt Recycling Train (ART). The ART recycles almost all the old asphalt on site into new asphalt. This makes it virtually circular. It also reduces CO2 emissions because trips to and from an asphalt plant are no longer necessary.
The City Council has adopted new policies for the protection of trees and wood stands. However, the City Council still needs to approve the tree ordinance. These new policies and ordinance replace the 2016 tree ordinance and provide stronger protection for trees and wood stands in Heerlen.
Today in the Lower House the debate on the closure of the intensive care unit, emergency room and birthing center of the Zuyderland hospital in Heerlen took place. Mayor Wever and Alderman Vrusch react with mixed feelings. And with pride in the support of all the people of Parkstad.
The college presents the 2025 - 2028 budget. Earlier, the college announced the so-called ravine year. The government's cut means a financial challenge of tens of millions of euros for Heerlen. With such a deficit, it is impossible to spare all residents, parties and organizations. The budget will be discussed and adopted by the city council on Nov. 6 and 7.
The exterior facades of Council House are in need of renovation. The last major work took place in the late 1970s. Therefore, it is again necessary to renovate the facades. Starting Sept. 30, we will cordon off the facades and begin expert restoration. The work will take about two years. The entrances to City Hall will remain accessible as usual.
On Saturday, September 21, Mayor Roel Wever presented a ribbon to Els and Wilma. Both ladies received the award for their years of dedication to Neighborhood Association Caumerveld - De Erk. Now that they are retiring, this is a well-deserved recognition for their unbridled dedication.
To mark the International Day of the Elderly, Heerlen residents aged 55 and older can visit three museums in the city for free. This can be done on Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6. People over 55 can enter for free if they show their ID. Castle Hoensbroek, the Mining Museum and SCHUNCK Glaspaleis participate. We hold this action for the 2nd time.
On Wednesday, September 18, the Cruyff Court at the Alberdingk Thijmplein in Heerlen was officially opened. Pupils of the Broeder school were introduced to the possibilities of the court through various sports clinics that day.
